If the only time you are indoors, in front of your PC, is when you’re planning your next outdoor trip, then you are sure to love BaseCamp. Offered by Garmin for free, BaseCamp can be used to plan your next hiking trip, off-road driving adventure, or biking voyage.

Garmin BaseCamp is available for multiple platforms. It is available for computers powered by Microsoft’s Windows operating system and it is also available for Macs and for iOS-powered mobile devices.
The system requirements for running Garmin BaseCamp on a Windows PC are: IBM-compatible computer running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or later; .NET Framework; video card that supports OpenGL version 1.3 or later (to view 3-D terrain).

When you’re done installing Garmin BaseCamp on your Windows-powered PC and you launch the application for the first time, you will be presented with a prompt that invites you to “Choose your Activity Profile.” Lots of activities are available: driving, motorcycling, walking, bicycling, trucking, direct, hiking, mountaineering, tourcycling, mountain biking, ATV, dirt biking, RV, off roading.

Speaking about prompts, you will also be presented with a Task Launcher that asks “What would you like to do?” You can choose to plan a trip, download BirdsEye imagery, create a Garmin Adventure, search Garmin Adventures, GeoTag photos, customize activity profiles, manage your device, view tutorial videos.

With Garmin BaseCamp you can create and edit routes, send maps to your Garmin device.
